Smile How do I introduce a new hamster to my hamster that I've had for 1 year??

Hi all,

I currently have had my black bear hamster, Lady Godiva, for about 1 1/2 years. She's very well behaved when it comes to me handling her.

My friend recently got a female hamster. (panda bear Syrian) He already had a male hamster (black bear Syrian) for about a month. Well, he put the female hamster in the male hamster's cage, and the fun began. He told me that he swore they mated for about 6 hours. So, he thinks the female may be pregnant, which isn't a problem because he wanted to have more hamsters anyway.

He told me he would give me one of the female babies, and I would love to have another hamster. Now, I know I need to have a separate cage for the new hamster because they are solitary animals. But, how do I introduce the new hamster to Lady Godiva?? Obviously I know I need to wait a bit before the introduction happens.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Chris

Syrian hamsters should NEVER be housed together. They will fight and injure, if not kill, eachother. "Black bear" hamsters are Syrian hamsters. Your hamster is also way too old to breed! She could have serious conplications when she goes into labor, which will need a vet. Start looking for a 24 hr. emergency vet now!

You don't. So many people always want to believe that Syrians are social animals and they are not. The only time they can even perhaps live together is when they are sisters and they have been raised with each other. Or they will fight, injure and kill each other. I currently have two Syrians (they're in separate cages), and even when it's nearing cleaning time and their cages start to smell more strongly, they start to feel infringed upon and the more dominant-personality hamster hisses at the other.
